Hints & Tips

  • Apples are your fastest-growing food resource; they do not need processing as grain does, and are faster than milking cows for cheese.

  • Try to strike a balance among your followers. For instance, growing hops and making ale helps keep them happy, but if they have too much ale, they get lazy.

  • It is highly recommended that you keep the manual handy during game play, as it has useful information on everything from growing food to laying siege to a castle.

The minimum system requirements for this game are:

  • G3 350MHz or faster computer
  • Mac OS 8.6 or higher
  • 128MB RAM
  • 750MB free hard drive space
  • Rage 128 or better video card
  • CDROM drive

    For multiplayer play, you must have a 500MHz G3 processor and an Internet or LAN connection.

    Please note: If your system meets but does not exceed these requirements, this game may have choppy animation, or the sound or video may hesitate. Please see the readme file included on the game disc for more details.

To install the game on your system:

  • Close all open windows on your screen, then
  • Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  • Double-click on the CDROM icon
  • Double-click on the Installer icon to install the game.
  • Then simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    To remove the game from your system, double click on your hard drive, then drag the Stronghold folder to the Trash.

    We have a patch available for Stronghold that addresses many game issues, and in fact we recommend everyone install this patch as a first attempt to resolve any and all problems with the game.

    Once you have downloaded the patch from our Stronghold Downloads page, simply double-click on the file to unStuff it. Then double-click on the unStuffed file and follow the directions to apply the patch. See the "Patch History" section on our download page for a complete listing of what the patch fixes, changes, and modifies.

"I can't get the game to play in OSX."

    Although this game is carbonized for OSX, if you are having trouble running the game in OSX, you may want to switch to OS9 before playing. For more information on how to do this, please refer to Document #51011 - "Macintosh General Troubleshooting".

"My problem isn't listed here."

    If your problem isn't covered in this document or in the Readme file, please try the following troubleshooting steps before contacting MacSoft Technical Support:

    1. Check to make sure that your system meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for the game. If your system meets these requirements, but does not exceed them, video or sound may be hesitant.
    2. Make sure that all other programs, including screen savers and virus scanning software, are turned off.
    3. Make sure virtual memory is turned off.
    4. Some software titles may have extension conflicts with this game. Turn off all extensions that you are not using for the game.
