If you have installed the Quake demo, or "Quake Hacked", remove them from your system then re-install the full version of Quake.
If that doesn't help, move the "Quake" folder to your desktop and attempt to run the program with the folder in that location.
Next, check to see that the "Pak" files in your ID1 folder are the right size. "pak0.pak" should be 17.4 Mb and Pak1.pak should be 32.6 Mb. If they are not, you will need to download and install the Quake 1.08.2-DE patch.
If all else fails, make sure that your hard drive is not full, that you have no forward or backslashes in the names of your hard drive or folders, and that your hard drive is not fragmented.

If you have any "Doom Sprockets" loading in your extensions manager, turn them off, then reboot your computer prior to playing the game again. This should fix your problem.
Sound "Echos"
