Sam needs to find three items before he can transform himself into Pajama Sam - the world's youngest superhero.
Flashlight: What better to see Darkness with than an Illuminator Mark V Jr. flashlight? It could end up in a couple of different places in the Land of Darkness. Check the old riverside shack, or the boarded-up mine shaft.
Lunchbox: The lunchbox (that's a Portable Bad-Guy Containment Unit to Sam) is what you're going to need to capture and contain Darkness. The lunchbox may be found under the water in an underground cavern, or sitting next to a wishing well.
Mask: Sam uses his mask to protect his secret identity, and will need it in order to capture darkness. It will either be stuck under a piece of furniture in Darkness' house, or the Carrot Freedom Fighter may be using it to conceal his identity.
Bert the Pencil: Sam may need Bert to help him finish what someone else started in the mine. Someone mistook Bert for a scoring pencil and left him in the park on the other side of the toll bridge.
Board: Sam will need a board to prove to Otto that wood really does float! The board can be found floating in the water next to the first bridge he sees upon entering the Land of Darkness.
Carrot Freedom Fighter: The leader of the "Salad Liberation Front" is on a mission to bring carrots to "main dish" status, but his fellow liberation fighters are trapped in Darkness' refrigerator. Right now the Carrot is using Sam's mask to protect his identity, but he'll give it back if Sam will help him to release the other freedom fighters. You can find the Carrot in the garden, next to the wishing well.
Doorknob: If the doorknob to the old riverside shack happens to be missing, Sam's going to need to find a replacement for it. One is hanging around just inside of the Doors of Knowledge.
Gears: The winch in the old boarded-up tunnel may be missing a gear, and Sam will have to find a replacement before he can use it to grab his flashlight. The old Grandfather Clock will give Sam a gear if you set his time correctly, but he has a lot of gears. If one doesn't fit, try trading it with the Grandfather Clock for another. The Grandfather Clock stands around the corner, through the Doors of Knowledge.
Gold Nugget: Sam needs a pound o' gold before he'll be able to pay the toll bridge and cross into the park. The gold is located inside the mines, down the shaft labeled "GOLD".
Hammer: The hammer is great for a lot of things - especially fixing broken furniture (with the help of a nail), or prying boards off of an old mine shaft. The hammer is located inside the old riverside shack.
Magnet: A magnet is just the ticket for retrieving metal objects from places that are too far away, or that would be too dangerous for Sam to reach. The lunchbox, lying beneath the surface of the underground river, or the nail sitting in the middle of a pool of hot lava are a couple of good prospects. If you're looking for the magnet, check the back of the secret door inside Darkness' den.
Nail: If Sam happens to break any furniture inside Darkness' house, he'll need a hammer and nail to fix it. You'll find the nail sitting in the middle of a pool of lava, next to the water meter.
Oars: If the current is especially powerful, Sam may need some oars to help Otto get up the rapids under the wishing well. He'll find them hanging in the music room, behind the Doors of Knowledge.
Oil Can: The oil can is useful for several different things. Counteracting the effects of rust on King, the mine cart, and oiling old rusty door hinges are a couple of its uses. The oil can is sitting next to an old shack by the side of the river.
Pickax: How are you going to mine all o' that gold without a big pickax? Search around inside of the mine. You're sure to find one.
Rope: With this, Sam will be able to get the board out of the water. Sam shouldn't have too much trouble finding a rope, after being strung up by the customs trees.
Nuggets puts you in control of a mine cart whose job is to travel through 110 caverns, picking up all of the treasures that are scattered about. As you work your way through the mines, you'll have to avoid lava, chasms, and your ever-growing tail of mine carts. To play Nuggets, just find the remote mining terminal inside the mine.
Steer the cart with the arrow-keys or numeric keypad arrows (make sure the num-lock is off if you choose to use the numeric keypad). You may also control the cart with the mouse by clicking on the arrows surrounding the joystick at the bottom of the screen. The cart will travel at three different speeds, depending on the amount of time the arrow keys (or mouse button, if you are using the mouse) are held down -- the longer you hold a key, the faster the cart will move.
Nuggets, when picked up individually, are worth 10 points. You can earn big bonus points, though, by running over more Nuggets while your trailing carts are still picking up their loads. For each consecutive Nugget picked up, you will earn the following amount of points:
You'll hear a cash register sound (cha-ching!) to let you know that bonus points are being added to your score.
Some nuggets may be encased in rock, and you'll need to find TNT to blast them free. Just find an explosive which corresponds to the color of the Nugget you are trying to pick up, and the rocks will explode.
Sometimes Tunnels are the only way to access a blocked-off area of the map. Enter one end of the tunnel, and your cart will emerge from the other end, somewhere else on the level.
Bonus Items
These items will appear for a limited time, and although they don't add to the length of your mine cart, they will add 100 points to your score if you are able to pick them up.
Chicken Nuggets
Glowing Crystals
Clusters of Crystals
Treasure Chest
If you crash too many times, the game will end, and you'll be asked whether you would like to Restart, Continue playing, or Quit. When you do decide to stop playing, Nuggets will remember the last level you completed, so you'll always be able continue the game from the point at which you left.
Cheese and Crackers
Cheese and Crackers puts a whole new spin on the game of Tic-Tac-Toe with three different game boards.
You and your opponent take turns placing cheese and crackers down on a grid (Sam will always play cheese). The goal of the game is to outsmart your opponent and place three, four, or five pieces in a row, depending on the size of the game board which you have chosen.
The first game board consists of a 3x3 grid of squares, and the object is to place 3 pieces in a row. Board two increases the size of the playing field to 5x5, and you'll have to place 4 pieces in a row. With the third game board, you'll be playing on a 7x7 grid, and will have to place 5 pieces in a row!
If you want to exit Cheese and Crackers without finishing a game, just click on the arrow.
Sam will need the oars if the Lunchbox is by the Wishing Well. Go into the treehouse and through the Doors of Knowledge. Go into the Music Room and climb on the piano bench, then click on the chandelier. To make Sam swing wide enough to reach the oars you need to use your mouse and click on either side of Sam, further out each time. He'll start swinging wider and wider and eventually will get close enough to reach them. At that point click on the oars and Sam will jump and grab them.
The mine shaft opening where you can find the gold vein is just past the door with no doorknob. Once you've entered this mine shaft (it has a big sign -Gold- over it) over it there are several directions you can go. Check them all out to find the gold vein. Make sure you've picked up the pickax to knock it off with!
To find the magnet pass through the Doors of Knowledge and at the far right end of the Hall of Doors there is a Book room. Enter this room and open the secret door (the bookcase) by clicking on the open book on the table and solving the riddle. Now go down the stairs behind the door, go through the door into the mines, ride King to the entrance, and re-enter Darkness' house. Go back to the Book room and you'll find the magnet on the back of the door/bookcase.
To find the Nuggets mini-game take Sam through the mine shaft opening with the big sign that says "Gold" over it. Sam and King will go through a room where the track dips down and then back up and will pause slightly in the next room at the top of the tracks.
There are two directions you can go at that point; take the right fork and at the next screen take the right fork again. In the next room there will be two directions Sam can go, either toward the back of the screen or the front of the screen. Click on the tracks aiming toward the back of the screen and Sam should appear in the next room at the Mining Terminal which is where you can play Nuggets the mini-game.
To retrieve the flashlight from the mine you must first find the winch and check out the gear you need to replace. Then enter Darkness' house. At the bottom of the stairs there are two doors. One is the living room (where the furniture is dancing) you must enter this room and check the time on the digital clock. Now to the top of the stairs where you must pass through the Doors of Knowledge (this may require another trip somewhere in the Land of Darkness). Once through you'll find the Hall of Doors. Find the grandfather clock and set his hands to the correct time (that shown on the digital clock). In return he'll give you a gear. You must match the gear to it's twin on the broken winch. Now you can go back to the mine and replace the gear, wind the winch and when you release them King and Sam will jump the broken track, Sam can reach out and grab the flashlight and you're on your way!
If you're still in the dark you need to flip the light switch in the room just after the dark room where the flashlight is (where King and Sam stop after their wild ride through the dark). To do this click on the other side of the tracks (there's a dip in the tracks) and as King is taking off click on the light switch on the wall. You've got to be quick! Sam will jump up and grab it, turning on the light, as they hurtle by.
If the mask is in Darkness' treehouse, it will be on the floor in the dancing furniture room. The mask-like object on the lamp is actually a pair of sunglasses, not the mask.. To get Sam's mask back if it is here, go into the kitchen and push the button to send the dumbwaiter down. Then go through the Doors of Knowledge, into the den, and solve the riddle of the big book on the pedestal. Open the secret door and go into the lab. Click on the chair until it sits in front of the shelves, then pick up the blue formula. If the chair breaks, you'll have to use the hammer and nail to fix it before getting the blue vial. Click on the workbench and use the magic cookbook to make an invisibility potion. Once Sam is invisible, you can ride the dumbwaiter back up to the kitchen, go to the living room, and retrieve Sam's mask. You'll need to hurry once Sam is invisible, since it only lasts for a limited time.
To get the answer to the "Water Meter" question at the Doors of Knowledge, go out of the treehouse and into the mines. Click to the right and go past the washing machine. The silver box on the wall is the water meter. Click on it to get the reading and go back to the Doors of Knowledge. Answer the water meter question and you're through the Doors!
