The Macintosh version of Age of Empires and the PC version are NOT compatible. You can only play multiplayer games with other MAC users. All computers involved in the game should also meet the multiplayer system requirements as listed on the box and at the top of this document.
For help with any other multiplayer questions, you should first refer to page 15 of your reference manual. This section explains everything about multiplayer gaming with Age of Empires.
"The trial version of Age Of Empires requires a monitor with a resolution of 800x600 or greater."
Normally this error occurs when using the AoE demo. AoE is designed to run at 832x624 resolution. The demo will not automatically change your resolution for you, so you need to set your desktop resolution to 832x624 or higher before starting the game. This can be done through the Monitors and Sound control panel. Contact your system manufacturer for assistance with this.
If you are receiving this error with the full version of AoE, make sure that your video card and monitor support the 832x624 resolution. Your system manufacturer can give you more information about this.
"ontnetclient.lib not found error"
This error indicates that you do not have the correct protocol loaded.
If you already have Open Transport loaded and running, just change your Network protocol from Mac TCP to TCP/IP.
If you are using OS 7.6 or lower, you will need to install Open Transport first.
This will install Open Transport 1.1.1, and enable network play.
Then upgrade to Open Transport 1.1.2 to fix the OntNetClient.lib error.
"Unexpected error" at launch
This error can be fixed by installing the latest upgrade patch. Please see the section labeled "Patch Information" below for details.
"CD Not found"
Turn off any secondary CD devices you may have such as CDR and DVD drives. Once you have done this, the launcher shouldn't have any problems with finding the CD.
If you have already installed the patch as outlined on the download page but you are still having trouble, try these simple troubleshooting steps:
Check to make sure that your system meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements. If your system meets these requirements, but does not exceed them, video or sound may be hesitant.
Make sure that all other programs, including screen savers and virus scanning software, are turned off.
Some software titles may have extension conflicts with this game. Turn off all extensions that you are not using for the game.
